New Delhi. Millions of depositors waiting for years to recover money stuck in Sahara Group’s cooperative societies have received some relief. The Central government has restarted the Sahara refund portal, paving the way for the verification of around 2 million pending claims and resumption of payments to eligible depositors. According to the government, around 4.2 million depositors have so far received a total of ₹9,267 crore.
The Ministry of Cooperation said the refunded amount has been transferred directly to bank accounts linked with the depositors’ Aadhaar details. With the portal becoming operational again, claims held up due to technical, administrative or documentation-related issues will also move forward. The focus will remain on identifying eligible claimants, verifying their documents and transferring the approved amounts after completion of the prescribed process.

Why Was the Refund Process Disrupted?
The concerned cooperative societies of the Sahara Group had been facing several technical and administrative difficulties. These included problems related to information technology systems, required licences, maintenance of computers and other equipment, as well as a shortage of staff. These issues affected the speed of claim verification and payments to depositors.
According to the Ministry, some premises of the Sahara societies were sealed in November 2025 in connection with matters that were not directly related to these cooperative societies. This affected their regular functioning and disrupted refund-related work. The Ministry of Cooperation subsequently intervened and helped resolve the technical and administrative hurdles. With the portal now restarted, work on pending claims is expected to move ahead.
Depositors of These Four Societies Will Benefit
The refund portal is being used to process claims from eligible depositors of four Sahara Group cooperative societies. These include Sahara Credit Cooperative Society, Saharayan Universal Multipurpose Society, Humara India Credit Cooperative Society and Stars Multipurpose Cooperative Society.
The refund mechanism was launched in July 2023 following an order of the Supreme Court. Its objective is to identify genuine and eligible claimants and return money deposited with the cooperative societies. The resumption of the pending-claim process is expected to provide relief to a large number of depositors who have been waiting for their money.
How Are Claims Verified?
The entire refund process has been kept online and paperless. The identity of applicants is verified through Aadhaar. Their names, membership details and bank account information are then matched with records maintained by the concerned cooperative society.
Deposit certificates and other required documents submitted by claimants are also examined according to the prescribed procedure. Once the information is verified and the claim is found eligible, the approved amount is transferred to the bank account linked with Aadhaar. The system is intended to prevent fraudulent claims and maintain transparency in the payment process.
What Should Investors Keep in Mind?
The government has advised depositors to use only the official CRCS-Sahara refund portal for submitting new claims or making necessary corrections to earlier applications. If a deficiency or error has been identified in a previously submitted claim, applicants can use the available resubmission facility to make the required corrections.
Depositors have also been warned against unauthorized websites, private agents and individuals promising to secure refunds quickly. Applicants must provide all required documents, accurate membership details and correct bank account information while submitting or resubmitting their claims. Incorrect or incomplete information could lead to delays in verification.
So far, ₹9,267 crore has been returned to around 4.2 million depositors. With the refund portal operational again, the process for around 2 million pending claims is expected to move forward. For depositors who have been waiting for years to recover their savings, the reopening of the portal is an important step toward resolving their claims and receiving eligible refunds.
