Canadian police have released photographs of 15 men charged in connection with a series of violent extortion incidents targeting Calgary’s South Asian community, as investigators seek information about the accused, their associates and other people who may be linked to the cases.
The Calgary Police Service said 16 people face a total of 56 charges arising from the extortion investigations. Only one of those charged remains in custody, while the others have been released on bail. Police said none of the accused are Canadian citizens.
Most of the accused are of Punjabi origin from India and are in Canada on student or work visas, according to police briefings and media reports. Police are continuing to seek information from the public as the investigations remain active.
49 Extortion Incidents, Including 19 Shootings
Calgary police said they have documented 49 extortion-related incidents since April 2025, including 19 shootings. Of those shootings, 18 were directed at victims or their property, while one involved suspects shooting at each other.
The Calgary cases form part of a wider pattern of extortion targeting South Asian communities in Canada, particularly in British Columbia and the Greater Toronto Area. Police described a model in which criminal networks recruit individuals to threaten victims or use violence, including shootings at homes and vehicles, to demand money.
Two dedicated police operations are continuing. Operation Orion is focused on investigations, while Operation Outage involves increased police presence and community engagement.
Jeff Bell, Superintendent of the Criminal Operations and Intelligence Division, said the operations had helped reduce violence. According to Bell, nine extortion-linked shootings occurred during the first 60 days of 2026, compared with two during the following roughly 100 days.

Police Seek Information on Accused and Associates
Investigators are seeking details about the accused and their associates, including where they spend their time and whether they are working. Police are also seeking help locating Germanjeet Singh, who is wanted on warrants.
Some of the accused were known within the community by aliases. Bell said that in one instance, a roommate did not know a suspect’s real name until police informed him. Bell described the release of most of the accused back into the community as “concerning”. Bail decisions are made by courts after the Crown presents its position.
Members of Calgary’s South Asian community welcomed the release of the photographs. Rishi Nagar, news director of South Asian radio station Red FM, described the move as a “relief”, saying the community had been demanding photographs because people otherwise had no way of knowing whether someone they encountered was among those charged.
Police have asked anyone with relevant information to contact Calgary police or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Investigators said the cases remain active and additional suspects may still be at large.
Police continue to seek information about those charged and their associates as the investigation into the extortion incidents continues.
