India’s banking industry is working on a coordinated cybersecurity response to strengthen protection against cyberattacks, data breaches and emerging digital threats.

State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman C S Setty said banks, through the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA), are exploring a structured system for sharing cyber threat information and establishing a regulated environment for testing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) models.

The proposed initiatives aim to help financial institutions identify vulnerabilities earlier and respond more quickly to security incidents.

How Will Banks Coordinate Cybersecurity?

The Indian Banks’ Association is working towards a formal mechanism that would allow banks to exchange information about cyber incidents, emerging threats and potential security weaknesses.

Setty said financial institutions already report incidents to regulators and security agencies. However, a dedicated information-sharing arrangement between banks could help them take preventive measures immediately after an incident is identified.

The initiative remains under development, with the industry examining how such coordination could operate effectively.

Why Is Information Sharing Important?

Cyberattacks affecting one financial institution can reveal weaknesses that may also exist in other banks. A structured information-sharing system could allow institutions to learn from incidents elsewhere and strengthen their own security arrangements before similar vulnerabilities are exploited.

Setty indicated that the banking industry was seriously examining this approach under the IBA. The broader objective is to improve collective preparedness rather than relying entirely on individual banks to identify threats independently.

How Is Digital Banking Increasing Cyber Risks?

The expansion of digital banking services has increased the number of systems and applications that require cybersecurity protection. Setty acknowledged that greater digital adoption also increases the potential attack surface available to cybercriminals.

However, he stressed that cybersecurity and digital adoption should not be treated as competing priorities.

Banks must strengthen security arrangements while continuing to provide digital financial services and maintaining customer confidence in banking systems.

What Did SBI Say About Its Data Breach?

Addressing a recent data breach involving SBI, Setty said an investigation into the underlying cause was continuing.

The bank’s immediate priority was to contain the incident, identify the vulnerabilities responsible and implement corrective measures.

He said the root cause analysis would require time to complete. SBI has also undertaken a comprehensive cybersecurity audit of its application programming interfaces (APIs), which support communication between banking applications and connected systems.

How Will Banks Address AI-Related Threats?

Another proposed initiative involves establishing an industry-level testing environment where advanced AI models can be examined under regulated and controlled conditions. The initiative would allow financial institutions to assess emerging AI technologies while considering associated cybersecurity risks.

The IBA has also developed a broader framework addressing AI-related security concerns, reflecting the industry’s growing focus on managing risks associated with advanced technologies.

What Does This Mean for Banking Security?

The proposed measures indicate a shift towards stronger cooperation among financial institutions in responding to cyber incidents.

Sharing threat information could help banks identify recurring vulnerabilities, coordinate preventive measures and respond more effectively when attacks occur.

At the same time, controlled AI testing and stronger API security assessments could support safer adoption of new banking technologies. The initiatives are still being developed, but their stated objective is to improve cybersecurity preparedness across India’s banking industry while preserving trust in digital financial services.
