Indian law enforcement authorities have extradited Saurabh Chandrakar, the prime accused in the alleged 6,000-crore Mahadev Online Book betting syndicate, from Oman. A special team from the Central Bureau of Investigation brought Chandrakar to India on Sunday evening following close coordination with Omani officials. The fugitive had been tracked by Indian agencies since 2023 before investigators pinpointed his presence in Oman and arranged his formal return. Chandrakar is currently wanted in connection with two separate charge sheets filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation, alongside an ongoing prosecution complaint submitted by the Enforcement Directorate under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
Humble Beginnings in Bhilai and the Move to Dubai
Chandrakar originally hails from Bhilai in Chhattisgarh, where his family led a modest life. His father worked as a clerk with the Bhilai Municipal Corporation before opting for voluntary retirement, while his mother is a homemaker. According to records documented by the Enforcement Directorate, Chandrakar began his working life in Bhilai running a small juice shop and drawing a basic monthly salary of 15,000 rupees. His circumstances transformed rapidly as the illegal betting enterprise gained ground. On February 16, 2022, Chandrakar left India and relocated to Dubai. Investigators confirmed that he did not return to the country after that departure, choosing instead to settle into a plush villa and operate the betting operation overseas with his associates.
Lavish 200-Crore Wedding Under Federal Scrutiny
Federal scrutiny intensified significantly following Chandrakar’s lavish wedding celebrations held in the United Arab Emirates in February 2023. The Enforcement Directorate claimed that the wedding took place at Ras Al Khaimah and involved an estimated 200 crore rupees spent entirely in cash. For the event, organizers hired private chartered jets to fly relatives and guests directly from India to the UAE. Financial findings by the agency also revealed that substantial cash sums were distributed to prominent celebrities who were flown in to perform during the multi-day celebrations. The enormous scale of unaccounted cash expenditure at the venue served as a critical trail for investigators mapping out the reach of the 6,000-crore illicit network.
The Transnational Network of Over 3,200 Panels
Investigators describe Chandrakar, along with co-accused Ravi Uppal, as the principal promoter, controller, and key financial beneficiary of the Mahadev Online Book organization. Operating out of a centralized corporate head office established in Dubai, the syndicate ran a sprawling network that went well beyond a single brand. The broader transnational operation encompassed several linked sister platforms, including Reddy Anna, Fairplay, Skyexchange, and Lotus365. The setup functioned through an extensive franchise model driven by panels. Operators running local branches received master login credentials directly from the Dubai headquarters, which also monitored operations and handled the settlement of weekly profit and loss accounts. Investigative agencies estimate that more than 3,200 such franchise panels were operating across various regions of India and the United Arab Emirates.
