Bhopal Police have registered a fraud case against two brothers accused of cheating a family of over ₹1 crore through false promises.

How Did the Alleged Fraud Begin?

The complaint concerns a family in Bhopal that allegedly lost a substantial amount of money after trusting claims involving tantra-mantra rituals and the restoration of peace within their household. According to the Crime Branch, the accused initially developed a relationship of trust with the family before allegedly obtaining money, jewellery and other valuables.

The complainant, Purushottam Sharma, a resident of Saket Nagar, approached the Crime Branch on October 14. He stated that his wife, Rajeshwari Sharma, became acquainted with Asha Yadav through a woman known to her. Asha allegedly introduced her brother, Mukesh Yadav, who claimed to practise tantra-mantra and offered to resolve family disputes through religious rituals.

The family reportedly began interacting more frequently with the accused after Purushottam’s son, Mayank, returned home, hoping that the rituals would help restore harmony.

How Much Money and Jewellery Was Taken?

According to the complaint, the accused allegedly exploited the family’s trust to obtain money and valuables over an extended period. The transactions reportedly began on May 25, 2025, and continued through different methods.

Rajeshwari allegedly transferred approximately ₹7.16 lakh into Asha Yadav’s bank account through several instalments. The complainant also stated that around ₹12.54 lakh in cash was taken from the house.

Besides the money, the accused allegedly obtained approximately 625 grams of gold and 500 grams of silver jewellery on the pretext of performing rituals. The family claimed that the combined value of the cash, jewellery and other disputed transactions exceeded ₹1 crore.

The complaint also refers to a separate transaction involving jewellery businessman Ram Panjwani, who reportedly told Purushottam that Asha had purchased gold worth approximately ₹17 lakh from his shop five months earlier. Of this amount, ₹5 lakh was allegedly paid in cash, while a cheque issued for the remaining amount was reportedly not honoured.

What Evidence Did Police Recover?

After learning about the jewellery transaction, Purushottam questioned his wife, who reportedly disclosed that money and ornaments had been handed over in connection with the rituals.

The family subsequently approached the Crime Branch, which recorded statements from Purushottam, his wife and his son while examining the financial transactions.

During the investigation, Rajeshwari reportedly submitted approximately eight cheques with a combined stated value of nearly ₹10 crore. She also handed over a blank cheque and six ATM cards. Police seized these documents and cards for examination. The investigation is assessing their connection with the alleged transactions.

What Action Have Police Taken?

Following the preliminary inquiry, the Crime Branch registered a case against Asha Yadav and Mukesh Yadav under Sections 318(4) and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to cheating and criminal conspiracy.

Investigators are examining how much money and property the accused allegedly obtained and the purpose for which the cheques and ATM cards were intended to be used.

The allegations remain under investigation, and further action will depend on the evidence collected by police.
