Is Your Smartphone Tracking You? Does Incognito Mode Really Make You Invisible?
In today’s digital age, concerns about privacy are more relevant than ever. Most smartphones are equipped with features that track user behavior, whether for navigation, advertisements, or improving user experience. Location services, for instance, use GPS to provide accurate directions, but they also allow apps to track your movements. Even when your location is turned off, your device may still gather data through Wi-Fi networks or Bluetooth. Additionally, social media apps, search engines, and other platforms often collect browsing habits, app usage, and device information.
Many believe that using Incognito Mode or private browsing will shield them from surveillance, but that’s not entirely true. According to Prof. Triveni Singh, Ex-IPS, Incognito Mode only prevents your browser from saving your search history, cookies, and data entered in forms on your device. It does not hide your activity from websites, internet service providers, or search engines. Essentially, you’re not invisible — companies can still track your behavior through your IP address, browser fingerprinting, and other methods.
To truly enhance privacy, users should consider disabling unnecessary location permissions, using privacy-focused search engines, and relying on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to mask their IP addresses. Additionally, browser extensions like ad blockers and privacy tools can limit tracking. It’s essential to understand that complete online anonymity is challenging, but by being proactive, you can significantly reduce the amount of data collected about you.
