Countering Cyber Crimes: 266 Harmful Mobile Apps Blocked, 6 Lakh Cyber Complaint Received In 2020 – Amit Shah

NEW DELHI: The National Cyber Crime Threat Analytics Unit, established as part of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) and inaugurated in January 2020, has so far prohibited 266 mobile applications deemed to be cyber security hazards.

According to the home minister, the National Cybercrime Threat Analysis Unit (NCTAU) has issued 142 cybercrime prevention warnings and has prohibited 266 mobile apps, while the National Cybercrime Forensic Laboratory has offered 3,800 forensic services (NCFL).

He stated that seven Joint Cybercrime Coordination Groups (JCCTs) had been formed, including representation from all states and union territories.

According to Shah, the National Cybercrime Training Center (NCTC) has registered 8,075 police officers for online training and has granted 1,877 certifications.

In addition, more than six lakh online cybercrime complaints were received through the home ministry’s National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, resulting in the filing of 12,776 FIRs, Home Minister Amit Shah told a consultative committee meeting here on Monday.

Addressing a meeting of the consultative panel on ‘Cyber Crime: Threats, Challenges, and Response,’ Shah stated that the job of establishing infrastructure to deal with cybercrimes had been ongoing for the previous seven years and was now complete all the way down to the police station.

According to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, all FIRs in 99 percent of police stations are registered on the central government’s web platform CCTNS, which is accessible to all 16,347 police stations in the country.

With the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) networked 16,347 police stations across the country, 99 per cent of police stations were registering 100% FIRs directly through CCTNS. He also stated that the work on developing analytical tools to combat cybercrime is 40 per cent complete, and that efforts are being made to train police and lawyers on cybercrime prevention.

According to the home minister, the authorities have published 960 cyber security advice, which are continually being distributed on social media.

Initiatives promoting cyber awareness and cyber hygiene among the general public, such as the MHA’s social media handle @CyberDost, regular SMSs to people, and so on, are being undertaken to strengthen the mechanism for dealing with cybercrimes in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.
