WhatsApp Impersonation Scam: Punjab Police’s Cyber Crime Unit Wins 1st Prize For Cracking Cases
The Punjab Police State Cyber Crime Cell won first place for effectively cracking the WhatsApp impersonation cases, in which imposters used profile images and names of VVIPs on their WhatsApp pages to fool government officials and ordinary people.
On August 31, the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) gave the award during the National Conference of State Cyber Nodal Officers in New Delhi.
Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav thanked ADGP Cyber Crime Praveen Kumar Sinha and the whole Cyber Crime Cell team for the achievement, calling it a proud moment for the Punjab Police.

ADGP Praveen Sinha stated that the NCRB received more than 100 case studies relating to Cyber Crime Investigation, of which 10 case studies from various law enforcement agencies were chosen for presentation at the National Conference.
Director NCRB Vivek Gogia, IPS, presented the award to DSP Cyber Crime Deepak Singh on behalf of Punjab Police. In July 2022, the State Cyber Crime Cell disrupted an International Cyber Fraud Racket by arresting three Nigerians who were using VVIP profile images and names on their WhatsApp profiles. The accused was found with a huge number of ATM cards, mobile phones, and other stuff.
Imposters’ method of operation was to send personal WhatsApp messages to innocent people, especially government officials, requesting cash favours in the form of Amazon gift cards, Paytm, or any other digital payment method. The Punjab Police had uncovered another track, leading to a deep-rooted cyber fraud conspiracy spreading from Delhi, involving Nigerians with a sprinkling of Indian accomplices.
The investigation in this case was overseen by IGP Cyber Crime RK Jaiswal and DIG Cyber Crime Nilambari Jagadale.
