Major Cyberattack Disrupts Japan Airlines, Impacts Flights: Here Are Key Details

Japan Airlines (JAL), the country’s second-largest airline, experienced a significant cyberattack early Thursday morning, disrupting its internal and external systems. The breach, which began at 7:24 AM local time (2224 GMT), has affected systems used for communication with external networks, raising concerns about possible flight delays or cancellations.
Statement from Japan Airlines
In a post on the social media platform X, JAL confirmed the cyberattack, stating:
“Since 7:24 AM today, we have been under a cyberattack targeting our internal and external network devices. This has caused issues with the systems that communicate with external networks. Both domestic and international flights may be affected.”
While acknowledging the attack, a JAL spokesperson told AFP that there were no immediate updates on delays or cancellations, but the situation remains under close monitoring.
Cybersecurity Concerns in Japan
This incident adds to a growing list of cyberattacks targeting Japanese corporations. JAL’s systems breach follows other high-profile cyberattacks, such as the 2022 disruption of Toyota’s supply chain, which forced the automaker to halt production at its domestic plants for an entire day.

Similarly, in June 2024, the popular Japanese video-sharing platform Niconico was forced to suspend its services after a large-scale cyberattack disrupted its operations.
Global Context
Cyberattacks on transportation infrastructure are becoming increasingly common worldwide. Earlier this year, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) faced significant delays due to a suspected cyberattack, which caused widespread internet and system outages at the Port of Seattle.
Implications for JAL
The cyberattack on JAL underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to digital threats. As investigations continue, it highlights the urgent need for strengthened cybersecurity measures in industries vital to public services and national economies.
Passengers are advised to check for updates on flight schedules and remain vigilant for any announcements from the airline.
