NEW DELHI: Are you concerned about being a victim of cybercrime? According to a recent analysis by Surfshark, the countries with the highest cybercrime density (number of attacks per million people) are the ones where your suspicions are most likely to be justified.

The United Kingdom is at the top of the list, with 3,409 victims per million internet users, about twice as many as the United States (1,724 per million). The number of victims in the UK increased by 130 per cent from 2018 to 2019, the second-highest year-on-year increase in the world behind South Africa, which saw a 277 per cent increase.

India rounds out the top ten with only four victims per million users, an increase of barely 1% over the previous year.

It has one of the lowest year-on-year increases in cybercrime victims, along with Belgium. Belgium, on the other hand, is ranked fourth in terms of density, with 94 victims per million users in 2020.

“Every year, as more of our lives become digital, the chances of becoming a victim of cyber crime increase. Since 2001, the number of people who have been victims of online crime has increased by 15 times, and financial losses have increased by more than 200 times, from $2,000 to $480,000 per hour “Vytautas Kaziukonis, CEO of Surfshark, agrees. “Over the next few years, the privacy and cybersecurity landscape will undoubtedly alter dramatically. To stay safe online, this is a good time to focus on personal cybersecurity hygiene.”

The research also examines the most prevalent cybercrimes, with phishing topping the list for the second year running. There were a total of 241,343 phishing victims in 2020. Phishing victims, on the other hand, lost the least amount of money ($225 per victim), while investment fraud victims lost the most ($38,287 per victim on average).

Confidence and romance fraud, on the other hand, had the biggest total financial impact on its victims. In 2020, people will have lost over $600 million as a result of this. Denial-of-service assaults were the least impactful online crime that year, with only about 2000 victims reporting a loss of $254 on average.
