How Ghaziabad Man Supplied SIMs On Fake IDs To Insurance Scammers In Mumbai

GHAZIABAD: With the arrest of a 25-year-old man who reportedly supplied SIM cards to the cyber criminals, the Samta Nagar Police cyber unit in Mumbai’s Kandivali made a breakthrough in the case of people being deceived into buying fake insurance packages.

Vikram Kumar Baburam, the accused, is a resident of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. According to the authorities, Baburam provided SIM cards to cyber criminals while exploiting the identities of others.

In June, police received a complaint from a 70-year-old man alleging that he was duped of Rs. 18 lakh by cyber fraudsters who fooled him into purchasing fake insurance products.

The complainant said that he received a phone call from an insurance representative offering him various profitable insurance policy schemes. The salesperson guaranteed him a loan of 12 lakh on the policy and a cover of 21 lakh when the plan matured.

The complainant deposited 18 lakh in the name of his grandson, but when he did not receive any insurance documents, he contacted the police. Police filed a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

During the course of the investigation, the police traced the complainant’s phone calls to Ghaziabad. When the police checked the numbers, they discovered that numerous persons were not using the SIM cards that were registered in their names.

After reviewing the CCTV footage from the stores, authorities narrowed down the buyer of the SIM cards and apprehended Baburam. He was detained on August 19 and taken to Mumbai on transit remand.

On Sunday, he appeared in front of a metropolitan court, who remanded him in police detention until August 26. “We discovered that Baburam used to buy SIM cards using other people’s documents and then provide such cards to gangs posing as telecallers,” said a police official from the Samta Nagar cyber cell.
