Cyber Attack On Healthcare Infra In Newfoundland, Triggers Alarm In Canada

A probable cyber assault on the healthcare system in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador has interrupted services and prompted the cancellation of certain appointments, according to health officials.

Thousands of medical appointments in Newfoundland and Labrador have been cancelled, and officials are blaming the interruption on unknown hackers who have taken down one of the province’s most critical information technology systems.

The alleged malware damaged the data networks that physicians and technicians in the province used to share medical records such as X-rays and CT scans. The police are looking into the incident, and no one knows when medical appointments will restart.

According to Health Minister John Haggie, an inquiry is underway to determine the nature and scope of the attack, which was discovered on Saturday.

“This resulted in the increasing collapse of what has been characterised to me as the brain of the data centre, as well as a loss of functionality and systems throughout the regional health authority,” he said, adding that authorities had taken precautions.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said that the disruption of healthcare services was caused by a ransomware attack, which encrypts computer files and demands payment to restore them, but Haggie could not corroborate this.

There has been a huge influence on the distant Atlantic province’s healthcare system.

The Eastern Regional Health Authority’s Chief Executive Officer, David Diamond, stated that emergency treatments would take place on Monday and that all other appointments would be postponed for another day.

Last week’s ransomware assault on Toronto’s transportation department caused no substantial inconvenience.

In June, a ransomware assault caused a hospital in Toronto to lose control of critical services.
