Beware Of Crime Redressal Websites: This Is How Cyber Crime Victims Were Again Cheated By Creating Fake Websites
NEW DELHI: With the arrest of 12 people, including two women, Delhi police claims to have busted a gang of cybercriminals who are cheating people who have been previously defrauded. The gang posing as government officials had floated several online redressal websites and were charging money for resolving their issues.
Police have found that the gang had allegedly cheated around 3,000 people who tried to lodge a complaint regarding online cheating. Police estimate that they made over Rs 1.74 Crores by cheating people who were looking for help. The gang used to charge processing fees from the victims who have been already duped and then block them.

A senior Delhi Police officer said that a complaint was received, wherein the complainant had alleged that while he was trying to complain about an incident of cheating, he came across a website – www.jansurkashakendara.in. The site claimed itself to be a crime reporting portal.
“He called on the mobile phone number provided on the website, who informed him that they are the authorized persons working with the government and they would lodge his complaint/FIR regarding the cheating. On the pretext of lodging his complaint, the alleged persons charged Rs 2,850 from him. Once the payment was received by them, they blocked the number of complainants,” said a senior officer.

Investigation of the case was taken up and it was found that victims who have been cheated by fraudsters are being again cheated on the pretext of helping them and impersonating as government authorized personnel. Similar complaints were found registered at National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the fraudsters received Rs 1.74 cr in the past year.
Explaining the modus-operandi, a senior official said the gang created a website in the name of www.Jansurakshakendra.in and attracted the cybercrime victims to lodge complaints on their website.
Using search engine optimization they got traffic on their website and Google started showing their website on the top of search results. When any victims used to call on the phone numbers given on the website, the gang member identified himself as government officials. They used to charge money from the victims ranging from Rs 500- to Rs 30,000 on the pretext of lodging and solving their complaints. After receiving the money, the gang used to block the complainants’ numbers.
The gang had created some more similar websites with names Jan Shikayat Kendra, Grahak Suraksha Kendra, NyayaBharat and others.
Making an appeal, Delhi Police said that the public should be vigilant while making search transactions. Whenever anybody is a victim of cyber-crime, he/she should report the same on the government portal to report cybercrime ishttps://www.cybercrime.gov.in/ and call the helpline number 155260. No charges or processing fee is levied for lodging a complaint for lawful action.
