Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s Instagram was recently the target of a sophisticated hacking operation. According to the reports, the cyber breach occurred while Meloni was en route to Rome from Egypt, underlining the fact that not even high-ranking officials are immune to digital intrusions.
The hackers allegedly posted a fake message thanking Elon Musk for free Bitcoins and even changed her profile picture to one of Elon Musk. This all got fixed quickly, but people still saw and shared the fake posts.
During the incident, attackers managed to post a fraudulent story and an update on Meloni’s account, deceitfully thanking Elon Musk for a supposed giveaway of 5,000 Bitcoins. To add a veneer of legitimacy to their scam, the hackers temporarily replaced Meloni’s profile picture with one of Elon Musk. Despite the swift resolution of the attack, with the fraudulent content being taken down within minutes, images of the posts continued to circulate on social media platforms, causing widespread confusion and concern.

The confirmation of the hacking incident was issued by Palazzo Chigi, highlighting that the targeted Instagram profile was Meloni’s longstanding personal account, established years prior. Efforts to apprehend the perpetrators are currently in full swing, with the Postal Police spearheading the investigation.
