After Data Breach, Cleartrip Takes Legal Action Against Hackers
Flipkart-owned travel portal Cleartrip has suffered data breach but said it is taking a legal recourse against the hackers.
But for the time being, the website has requested its users to change their passwords as assigned for safety.
Cleartrip’s internal online travel system has suffered due to the breach after which the start-up revealed that an e-mail was delivered to its customers on 18 July and requested them to reset or update their passwords as a precautionary measure.
The message also stated as follows: “This is to inform you that there has been a security anomaly that entailed illegal and unauthorised access to a part of Cleartrip’s internal systems.”
The travel agency made numerous attempts to reassure its clients that the event did not compromise any of the account holder’s personal information and that only a few personal details have been breached.
The company also added that it is taking “appropriate and strict legal actions” over the incident.
The company said it is making sure that all the required steps are being taken as per the law.
In 2021 Walmart-owned Flipkart had acquired a 100% stake in Cleartrip.
Past Data Breaches
Over the past few years, data breaches have become more frequent in India.
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) filed an FIR concerning a cyber security breach involving its email system earlier this month.
The markets regulator stated in a statement that “recently a cyber security problem has been discovered on the email system of SEBI which was undergoing a system update” and that “hence an FIR as per the relevant provisions of law has been filed.”

Budget carrier SpiceJet reported that ransomware attacks had caused multiple flight delays and cancellations in May 2022.
SITA, the company that provides Air India’s passenger service systems, was breached in February 2021. As a result, 4.5 million passengers’ personal information was stolen.
India came in sixth place among the nations that experienced the most data breaches.

What Experts Say?
According to a cybersecurity business called Surfshark, 18 out of every 100 Indians have experienced data breaches since 2004.
Additionally, as of June 1, it was reported that India’s breach rate has increased from five to 42 compromised accounts every minute, a 740% increase over the first quarter.
A startling 254.9 million of the 14.9 billion accounts that have been compromised since 2004 are those of Indian users.
In terms of number of people whose data has been compromised, this places India sixth in the globe, the business reported in June.
