How Hackers Created Fake Profile Of 439 Fake Pregnant Women To Cheat Govt Department Of Rs 22 Lakh

PANCHKULA: The women and child development department’s internal software was hacked and fake 439 pregnant woman beneficiaries were created to siphon off Rs 21.95 lakh. Police has registered an FIR and started the probe in the cheating case.

According to Aaru Vashisht, a women and child development project officer, the department gives financial assistance to pregnant women in three instalments of Rs 5,000 under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.

A data entry operator employed by the department is responsible for reviewing forms submitted in this direction via the department’s portal and obtaining clearance from the project officer before submitting the file for funding approval. Vashisht claimed that during the verification process, she discovered that an unknown person had hacked the official system and uploaded a total of 1,319 (of 439 cases) instalments from various anganwadi centres between May 20 and 30.

Cross-checking revealed that no case had been approved by any supervisor from any of the district’s anganwadi centres, and the forms had been approved fraudulently by hacking the department’s website. Vashisht stated that she forwarded a letter to senior officials, but the cash was accepted and distributed to the phoney recipients.

“Nobody ever received clearance for all three instalments at the same time, but all phoney 439 cases were awarded all three instalments here,” he explained.

Police filed a case under the IPC sections 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), and 471 (fraudulently or dishonestly uses any document or electronic record as genuine).
