Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) For Indian Navy: INS Valsura Conducts 3 Day Workshop

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy’s flagship technical training institute, INS Valsura, hosted a workshop on – Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (Al) for Indian Navy, from January 19-21.

During the three-day event, speakers from major IT companies such as Google, IBM, Infosys, and TCS discussed industry perspectives. It was held under the aegis of the Southern Naval Command. Distinguished academicians from IIT Delhi, New York University, Amrita University, and DA- IICT also discussed the newest trends and uses of Al.

Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief, Southern Naval Command, delivered the keynote presentation, emphasising the strategic relevance of this niche technology and its application in the Indian Navy. Over 500 people took part in the webinar through the internet.

The Indian Navy is working hard to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into vital mission areas.

INS Valsura, located in Jamnagar, has already been certified as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the field of Big Data, and a cutting-edge lab on AI and Big Data Analysis (BDA) was established in January 2020.

The Navy is currently in the process of establishing a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in the field of AI at INS Valsura, which has been instrumental in the advancement of pilot projects pertaining to the adoption of AI and BDA in the domains of maintenance, HR, and perception assessment, in collaboration with academia and industry.

Furthermore, because data is the fuel for all AI engines, the Navy is heavily involved in integrating and reorganising its corporate data.

The Navy has established an AI core group that meets twice a year to examine all AI/ML activities. The Navy’s AI programmes are expected to have an influence at both the tactical and strategic levels.

AI initiatives are reviewed on a regular basis to ensure that they are completed within the timeframes that have been established. The Navy also provides AI/ML training to its officers and sailors at all levels of expertise. This training is provided by both the Navy’s own training schools and renowned IITs. Over the last three years, several individuals have participated in large and minor AI-related courses.

The Indian Navy’s endeavours are in line with the country’s objective of making “India the global leader in AI, enabling responsible and transformational AI for All.”
